First Things.

While I’m Not Working on My Manuscript, Here Are Some First Books I Like

or, Hats Off to the Modernists, Mostly

or or, Three Pensive Men & a Rack

Harmonium by Wallace Stevens (1923)

White Buildings by Hart Crane (1926)

Discrete Series by George Oppen (1934)

Field Guide by Robert Hass (1973)

One of these things is not like the others, but this image came up on the first page of results when I googled image-searched Robert Hass.  At first I thought maybe the person in this picture named her breasts “Robert” and “Hass” but upon closer inspection, she actually has lines of Hass’s tattooed on her arm.  The poem from which the lines are taken is in Praise, not Field Guide, but since no one’s really looking at the tattoo I’m pretty much okay with it.
